Public Enemy is credited as one of the heaviest influences in the hip-hop musical community, ranging from Beastie Boys to Run D.M.C. The most recognizable line-up is frontman Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Professor Griff, and his S1W group. Formed in Long Island, New York in 1982, during one of the most restless periods for the African American community, the group became famous for their heavy politically influenced lyrical style and outspoken media presence, taking up voice specifically for the urban black culture. It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back (1988) was voted album of the year in a predominantly rock environment on the airwaves. "Fight the Power" off "Fear of a Black Planet" was ranked the 80th best song of all time by Acclaimed Music. Many have come to see Public Enemy's presence as a resonating force in musical history. On their 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, Rolling Stone Magazine placed them 44th. In 2007, they were inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. Despite their raucous lyrics and angry, often violently, charged messages, Public Enemy is international recognized and often credited with successfully airing grievances of the urban black culture and promoting positive political change for African Americans.
