One of the greatest female singer/songwriters/writers and photographers of all time, Patti Smith, has been an inspiration to entertainers worldwide for over 40 years. Considered to be one of the founders of the punk rock scene in the mid- 1970s, she has continued to grace the music scene, whether appearing at small intimate clubs or a world renowned music festival with a timeless intensity that has never receded. Her most famous album, "Horses," which she considers a three-string compilation of poetry and song, or word music, contains Smith's best known song, "Because the Night," a collaboration with the legendary Bruce Springsteen. Recently, Smith was awarded the 2011 Polar prize, considered Sweden's highest honor given to individuals or institutions conveying the greatest representation of advancement and achievement of excellence in music. This award, founded by Stig Anderson, manager of Sweden's sensational pop music group ABBA, has been awarded in the past to music royalty such as Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder. Smith pursues a life on a virtually endless tour, promoting her music, literary, and visual acumen not only for the music itself but for the messages within the medium. This Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is a prolific book writer, photographer and music video producer as well. Known to be invested in social and humanitarian issues, globally, Smith uses her talents to shine the spotlight on exemplary people, social causes, undiscovered talent, and environmental issues.
