Black Flag is one of the most well known hardcore punk bands of all time. The group formed in 1976 in Hermosa Beach, California by core founding member Greg Ginn. The band has gone through countless line up changes since their initial inception. Black Flag drew from political, sociological and psychological themes for their song's lyrics. Moreover, Black Flag was known for singing against authority, conformity, social paranoia and poverty. In addition, Black Flag was one of the first groups to epitomize the independent band DIY (do it yourself) aesthetics. Throughout their 4-year recording career, the group released 6 full-length studio albums. There has been talk for a 7th full-length album to be completed in 2013. Black Flag also had a strong visual presence and representation with controversial artwork, album sleeves, logos and gig posters. The band has cited The Ramones and The Stooges as major influences on their sound. In 1981, Henry Rollins joined the group as lead singer. After Rollins joined the band, the group went into the studio to record their debut offering. Black Flag has been a major influence on newer groups. Some bands that have publicly cited Black Flag as an influence include Tool, Red Hot Chili Peppers, A Perfect Circle, Mudhoney and Sonic Youth.
