Yo La Tengo in an indie rock band that formed in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1984. The have become of the most celebrated American Indie Rock bands from the 80s. Since the early 90s the group has sustained its lineup of Ira Kaplan (guitars, vocals, piano), Georgia Hubley (drums, piano, vocals), and James McNew (bass, vocals). In addition, Georgia Hubley and Ira Kaplan are a married couple. Yo La Tengo has never achieved widespread mainstream success, but their band has created a devoted and long lasting underground following.
Yo La Tengo is also well known for their immense list of cover songs. Since 1986, Yo La Tengo has released 13 full-length studio albums. They are currently signed to major indie label Matador. They released their 13th full-length offering, Fade in 2013, which peaked at number 28 on the US Music Charts. This is their highest album ranking in their prolific music career.
The band has continued to tour worldwide since the late 80s. After 30 years in the music industry, Yo La Tengo has said they approach the creative process in a new way. This spontaneous dynamic has allowed them to craft new ideas and approaches into their evolving sound. They are currently touring the world on the back of their new studio album. The band still calls Hoboken their home base. Additionally, the group still performs their annual 8 nights of Hanukkah with Yo La Tengo in Hoboken.
