Info

Opeth is a Swedish heavy metal band that has existed for more than 20 years, featuring various lineups built around singer and guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt. The band has featured a very wide range of syles and influences in its music, from an extreme death metal style to simple acoustic arrangements, often varying abruptly between extremes. The bands first real tour did not come until 2001, when it played around Europe in support of its "Blackwater Park" album. This included a gig at the Wacken Festival in Germany before a crowd of 60,000, one of the major moments in the band's emergence as a globally recognizable act. Its ablum "Deliverance" made some headway on the U.S. charts in 2002, giving the band a foothold in the U.S. that has since grown. Subsequent albums such as "Ghost Reveries" in 2005 and "Watershed" in 2008 have experienced a strong mix of commercial success with buyers and critical acclaim from reviewers, which is remarkable given that the band experienced turnover among key members in that time. This included the departures of Martin Lopez in 2006 and Peter Lindgren in 2007. The band has also released a number of very popular live DVDs, including 2010's "In Live Concert at the Royal Albert Hall." Opeth also re-released a commemorative edition of "Blackwater Park" that same year in celebration of the band's twentieth year in existence.
