Born in Eversley, Hamshire on February 1, 1980, musical songstress Laura Marling is a singer of contemporary indie folk rock songs. The daughter of a music teacher, Marling's early exposure to music helped to mold her into the creative musician that she is today. Marling got her first taste of performing music live in 1996 when she moved to London and became a notable figure in the city's "nu-folk" music scene. For about 10 years, Marling performed with a variety of area musicians and bands before she finally released her own album in 2008. The album, titled Alas, I Cannot Swim, won Marling the prestigious recognition of winning the 2008 Mercury Award, and it was the first of three albums Marling would release between between the years 2008 and 2012. Laura Marling's voice is powerful and strong and her often profound lyrics conjure up and evoke a variety of strong emotions.
