Janelle Monae is an R&B singer who was born on December 1st in 1985 in Kanas City, Kan. After graduating high school, she received a scholarship to the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in NYC; however she also dropped out of that school. She moved to Atlanta in 2003 and there she gained the attention from a successful hip hop artist named Big Boi who wanted her to feature on song tracks from OutKast. She was featured on “Call the Law” and “In Your Dreams.” She later released her own EP called Metropolis: Suite I (The Chase). The EP had some commercial success and peaked at number 115 on the Billboard Charts. The EP also helped her gain her first Grammy Nomination for the song “Many Moons”. With her foot in the door she later got signed to Bad Boy Records by the famous producer Sean Combs. Her debut album released by Bad Boy Records was called The ArchAndroid: Suites II And III and helped her receive another Grammy nomination at the 53rd Grammy Awards. Her single “Tightrope” was also nominated for a Grammy that same year. Her first album peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Charts. Since August 2012 Janelle Monae has been the spokeswoman for Cover Girl. Her second studio album was released on September 10th 2013 and was called “The Electric Lady”. The first single released was “Q.U.E.E.N” and featured Erykah Badu. Other features included Miguel and Prince. This album peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Charts.
