Broken Bells is an indie rock band made up of the Shins’ lead vocalist James Mercer, and musician/producer Danger Mouse (Brian Joseph Burton). The two met at a music festival in Denmark in 2004. Back in the states, Mercer and Burton began their collaboration in Burton’s own private studio in Los Angeles. The result was a mellow yet experimental blend of playful synthesizers, melodic piano and guitar, and various types of percussion. Sometimes referred to as a “super group”, Mercer and Burton won over a number of fans from their success with previous musical projects, however Broken Bells has allowed the two to bring their own unique sounds together; Mercer, with his easily recognizable vocal timbre, (particularly his falsetto), and Burton’s deep, resonating synthesizers. Mercer and Burton have been a duo since 2009, having first released the self-titled album “Broken Bells”. This was followed by an EP in 2011 by the name “Meyrin Fields”, and “After the Disco” released in February 2014. The duo has toured together a number of times, playing small local venues in cities across the United States, as well as playing in major music festivals such as the Governors Ball, Bonnaroo, and Coachella. They’ve received rave reviews for both their albums and their live performances, particularly their ability to create a mood and often times “supernatural” feeling with their music, on and off the stage.
