The musical artist Billy Joel, was born in the Bronx, NY, May 9, 1949, named William Martin "Billy" Joel. He has been a successful singer, songwriter, and pianist since the early 1970's. His unique voice and style of music has stood the test of time and he still rocks out the tunes. Starting in the early 70's, Joel has amassed top 40 hits in the 70's, 80's, and the 90's. These musical accomplishments were acknowledged with 33 top 40 hits in the United States, and he has sold over 150 million records worldwide. This success has further been honored by nominating Joel for 23 Grammy Awards throughout his career, winning 6 of them. Since the release of his big hit "Piano Man" in the early 70's, Joel has become the sixth best-selling artist in the United States and third in solo sales. The Songwriters Hall of Fame acknowledged his accomplishments with an induction in 1992. A few years later in 1999, he was made a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2006 he joined other artists in the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. His talent was also honored in 2001 with the Johnny Mercer Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2013, Billy was awarded with the nation's highest honor for using his art to influence the American culture, the Kennedy Center Honors. Billy Joel continues to tour and plays all of his music from the beginning of his career to current works.
