Gladys Maria Knight, "The Empress of Soul," (born May 28, 1944) is a seven-time Grammy Award-winning American R&B/soul singer, actress, humanitarian and author. She is best known for the hits she recorded during the 1960s and 1970s, for both the Motown and Buddah Records labels, with her group Gladys Knight & the Pips, the most famous incarnation of which also included her brother Merald "Bubba" Knight and her cousins Edward Patten and William Guest. Given the prestigious title of "Empress of Soul", Gladys Knight is a legendary singer songwriter who has also achieved success through writing books and acting. Gladys Knight is perhaps best known for her chart topping songs released with Gladys Knight and the Pips through the 1960's and 1970's that include "Midnight Train To Georgia", "You're the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me", and her take on the Marvin Gaye classic "I Heard it Through the Grapevine. In 1978, Gladys Knight embarked on a solo career that included recording the popular song "That's What Friends Are For" and in 1996, she was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Throughout her musical career, Gladys Knight has released a slew of albums and singles and has won numerous award including 4 Grammy awards. Besides winning 4 Grammy Awards, Gladys Knight has also won 10 prestigious awards including a Lifetime Diva Award and a BET Lifetime Achievement Award, and she even has her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Not only has Gladys Knight received critical praise and fan adoration for her music, but she has also won praise through her acting. She has appeared in movies and has made guest appearances on numerous shows including The Jeffersons, A Different World, Living Single, Benson and 30 Rock. Her next tv appearance will be later this year on the popular show Dancing With the Stars and she is said to be practicing hard to win the competion.
