Emmylou Harris is a singer and songwriter from the United States. Harris, who was born on April 2, 1947, in Birmingham, Alabama, has achieved much success in a career lasting over forty years. Harris managed to create multiple charting-topping singles and albums in genres such as country, folk, rock, bluegrass and pop. To this day, Harris' efforts have earned her a total of twelve Grammy awards.

Harris began to seriously pursue her career in college at the University of North Carolina. In college she studied music and learned to play guitar but eventually left school in pursuit of her musical profession. This lead Harris to move to New York where she met fellow songwriter and soon-to-be husband Tom Slocum. This connection led to the production of Harris' first album, Gliding Birds.

In 1971, Harris was referred to Gram Parsons who was searching for a female vocalist to assist on his first solo album GP. Eventually, Harris was working with Parsons on a consistent basis and even touring with his band the Fallen Angels. In 1973, Parsons and Harris were set to produce an album, Grievous Angel, but unfortunately, Parsons died from drug overdose. After the passing of Parsons, shook by the experience, Harris produced one of her most emotionally charged songs, "Boulder to Birmingham", which expressed her raw feelings towards losing Parsons.

During her career, Harris has collaborated with many music legends. She has worked with Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, the Dixie Chicks, Dave Matthews, Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton.
