The Decemberists are an American folk rock band from Portland, Oregon. Their name, The Decemberists, refers to the Decembrist Revolt in year 1825 inside Imperial Russia. The band currently consists of 5 members, Colin Meloy (guitar, lead vocals and primary songwriter), Chris Funk (various instruments and guitar), Jenny Conlee (piano, accordion, Hammond organ and keyboards), Nate Query (bass) and John Moen (drums). The band originally formed in 2000 when Colin Meloy left his band, Tarkio, in Montana and moved to Portland where he met Nate Query, who introduced him to Jenny Conlee. Meloy was playing a solo act when he met Chris Funk, who had been a longtime fan of his old group Tarkio. Chris would eventually join the band full-time for their third album, but he initially played pedal steel percussion for the first two. Ezra Holbrook was the band’s initial drummer but would be replaced for the second album by Rachel Blumberg. Following their initial five track EP release they would garner much success. Recording their first full-length album called "Castaways and Cutouts" under Hush Records label, they would then move on to the Kill Rock Stars label. There, the band produced two more albums, "Her Majesty the Decemberists" and "Picaresque." This would eventually lead them to signing with Capitol Records label where they still are today. In total, The Decemberists have released seven full-length albums including their latest undertaking called "What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World." This latest album was released on January 20th, 2015.
