Information of Gregory Porter

Gregory Porter was born in Los Angeles, California and later went to Bakersfield, California where he grew up. He began his music career by performing the jazz genre of music in local jazz clubs. It is in this jazz clubs that he met Kenyatta Kamau, a composer, saxophonist and pianist. Kamau became his close friend and a mentor to him and later introduced him to Hubert Laws. Laws later featured his vocals on one song of his 1998 album. In the recording session of this track, Eloise Laws, sister to Hubert Laws came through and she was fascinated by what Porter did. She propped Porter to become one of the leads in It Aint Nothin But the Blues. This became the biggest break-through for Porter. He released his debut album in 2010 entitled Water, and then the second one entitled Be Good followed two years later. His first album saw him nominated in the 53rd Grammy Awards in the Best Jazz Vocal category while his second album gave him a nomination in the Best Traditional R&B Performance category of the 55th Grammy Awards, thanks to his superb song, On My Way To Harlem. In 2013, Blue Note Records signed him. He made his third album, Liquid Spirit, which won him the Best Jazz Vocal Album award in 2014 Grammy Awards.
