Paul McCartney, an English musician and songwriter, is probably most known for being in the Beatles, although he has had a long career as a solo artist. Paul McCartney and John Lennon have been considered one of the strongest song partnerships of the century, creating over 180 songs with both working equally on music and lyrics. Paul joined the Beatles when they were still called the Quarrymen and stayed with the band until it dissolved in 1975. He was often considered the main leader of the band along with John Lennon. Despite the break-up, the Beatles music retained epic status and is cited as an influence to hundreds of other musicians and artists worldwide. After leaving the Beatles, Paul formed the band Wings with his wife, Linda McCartney, Denny Laine, formerly of the Moody Blues, and drummer Denny Seiwell. They toured extensively throughout Europe. Success soon followed, with many of their albums going platinum and the band gaining a strong international following. The group disbanded in 1981 and Paul began an increasingly successful solo career. He is considered one of the most popular and successful musical artists of all time. He has sold over 100 million albums and singles, been knighted for his services to music, and been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His reach has even extended beyond pop and rock, having composed classical pieces such as "Standing Stone" and "Liverpool Oratorio."
