At the age of eight years old, Jason DeRulo wrote his first song, "Crush on you." As a teenager, he went to the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York. He began writing songs for hip-hop and R&B stars, such as Lil Wayne at the age of 17. Around the same time, he was invited to Los Angeles to write songs for Sean Kingston. Producer J. R. Rotem soon realized that Jason's talent went beyond writing music. He belonged on stage. Jason has been nominated for and won several awards. In 2006, he won The Apollo's Grand Championship. He also won 'Songwriter of the Year' at the BMI Pop Music Awards, in 2011, for his songs "In my Head", "Ridin Solo", "Watcha Say", and "Replay." In 2013, he was nominated for the MOBO Awards 'Best International Artist.' His single, "Watcha Say," went triple platinum, and his singles "Ridin' Solo" and "In My Head" went double platinum. Having his first two singles hit number one on the Billboard's Top 100, was an accomplishment achieved by no other male solo artist. He even had the privileged of touring with the Black Eyed Peas and Lady Gaga. When recording, Mr. DeRulo tries to create an environment that will allow him to "feel" the music because the "Music becomes conversational and real." Jason said that the music he makes is for the world and that he is "hopefully making it a brighter place for somebody."
