Melvin Mercer, David Jude Jolicoeur and Vincent Mason make up the hip-hop group known as De La Soul. Working since 1987, if you have not heard of De La Soul, you should, as their contributions to jazz infused rap and sub genres is renowned to this day. The trio have performed with A Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def, and many other popular groups, but gained real notoriety when they collaborated with Gorillaz in 2006 on the single "Feel Good Inc." The success of the track earned the group their first and only Grammy win for Best Pop Vocal Collaboration. De La Soul were honorees at the 2008 VH1 Hip Hop Honors, especially noted for their debut 1989 record, 3 Feet High and Rising. At the time of its release, the album was not well received or reviewed, but has since gone on to become a major underground musical cult sensation. In 1998, Source magazine honored 3 Feet High and Rising in their 100 Rap Albums of All Time, citing the witty lyricism and unique positive outlook in a genre flooded with violent gangster rap at the time. De La Soul is revered for their ever evolving sound source and their resistance toward being permanently labeled in the rap, hip hop, pop, or alternative genre.
