The Spanish / Austrian Indie rock band "Backup the Walrus" preserves the music feeling of the 1960s and 1970s. The three band members record their music live and are more interested in the quality of songwriting than in the actual standards in mainstream music. Catchy melodies and compelling lyrics to the fore! Now their first album "VOTE !" is out on CD and as mp3 free-download.
In fall 2010, Juanma Pastor Labrandero, a young musician from Spain, goes abroad to Austria for his studies of literature. In December 2010, jamming with the two Austrian musicians Andi (bass-guitar) and Lukas (Drums), the band forms up around the former studio musician from Valencia.
After several years of work for the big studios in Madrid and his look behind the scenes of the music industries, Juanma now concentrates on his own definition of music. This is characterized by the study of the great examples of rock 'n' roll and rock music such as Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and not least: The Beatles - combining it with current influences such as Jack White.
The title of the 10 track debut album "VOTE!" plays cynically with the current trend of casting shows, and conveyor-mainstream productions. "We want to be a 'backup' of the music culture of the 1960s and 1970s, when music expressed an attitude for life and was not a wear and tear article." Andreas Winkler, bass player and backing vocalist, formulates the ambitious goal of the band, which was also decisive for the name.
The genre of the band, in nowadays terms, is settled in the 'Retro-Indie Rock', after all, lead singer and songwriter Juanma combines the influences of his formative years with modern touches.
