How a Techno-phobic Lives With Technology

OK. I admit it. I HATE the Internet. Either I can't get on or if I do get on, I spend forever surfing for golden nuggets of data, such as how many people in Southeast Michigan are visually impaired (answer: a lot). Or worse, I do find what I am looking for and end up spending hours and hours cruising the Web for related information or, what the heck, checking in with various chat groups to see how everyone is doing. That is, until I notice that it is 2:30 in the morning and, remembering that I become when I haven't had enough sleep, exit cyberworld.

But I know that technology is a growing part of my business world, so I am determined to love it at any cost (I love the Internet, I love the Internet, I love the Internet...). Adam Toffler says that this is the Information age and that the corner store has become the cyberstore. He says that technology is increasingly critical to business success and to living the lives we all want (you know, sane, wealth-generating ... where we remember the names of our children - those kinds of lives).

The question is, what technology makes the most sense for a woman business owner? My answer is that any technology that saves you significant amounts of time is worth its price. Get it. As we all know, time is our most precious commodity these days - literally irreplaceable. One of the best ways to grow a business is to spend the time we have more effectively. As Thornton May, Vice President for Research and Technology for Cambridge Technology Partners, says, "Don't be afraid to spend more money if it lets you go faster. You can always make more money; you can't manufacture more time.

So what technology saves time and how can we make use of it? Here are my top ten technology-related recommendations for the very busy female entrepreneur:

  1. Get a cellular phone ... one of those really cool little jobs. They aren't just for safety. They also offer efficiency.
  2. Only give the cellular number to your secretary (if you have one), your significant partner, and your teen if you are unlucky enough to be raising one at the moment. Don't give your number to anyone else. The phone is for outgoing calls, not untimely interruptions.
  3. Use e-mail, as long as you use some screening software to weed out the messages you know you will never read.
  4. Ditto for electronic banking. Once you learn it, you'll love it as a timesaver. Start with your personal banking. Once you trust the system, see what parts of your business banking you can transfer over to electronic banking.
  5. Network with your accountant via cyberspace so she can review your financials without either of you having to make office visits.
  6. Ditto for clients. (But make excuses to see them face-to-face occasionally so they know you still, and always will, care about them).
  7. Pick a favorite search engine on the Internet and really learn how to make the most of it.
  8. Consider a voice command system for your computer. It is such a wonderful feeling of complete power to be able to yell commands at your PC.
  9. Network your computers at work with your computers at home.
  10. Invest in any "smart home" technology which will make your life easier. That way, when you finally get home at 9 p.m. after a long day, your meal will be cooked, the wash will be done, and your favorite television show will be taped and waiting for you.

Gotta go. Just got an urgent email message from a potential romantic partner. I hope it's not some 4-year-old who is getting typing help from his grandmother. That happened to someone, you know, and if it could happen to her...
